The Heritage Project
Born out of a need to preserve our heritage and make it known to all, RPG Foundation seeded The Heritage Project in 2018. The Heritage Project develops, upgrades and promotes heritage sites around Mumbai, through a 360° approach.
Our approach uplifts communities and spaces around heritage sites and enhances the heritage consciousness of the city. Every site that is part of the Project is a collaborative effort with the government. It is done in a planned and phased manner to ensure consistent visitor footfall.
The Heritage Project enables people to relive and experience history through art, interactive collectibles, publications, and events. Community spaces are upgraded and heritage-themed civic amenities such as signage, streetlights and benches are installed to improve visitor experiences and facilitate accurate interpretation of the site.
We started with The Banganga Revival Project in 2018. The Banganga Precinct is home to ancient temples and the holy Banganga Tank, built in 1127 AD. We are reviving the site to help maintain its heritage status and make it known to all.
The same year, the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We undertook the responsibility to create awareness and a develop a sense of public responsibility by funding the implementation of a comprehensive Signage plan for this UNESCO World Heritage Site in Mumbai (collection of over 94 buildings in South Mumbai) in 2019.
Progressing to achieve our vision, in 2020, keeping visitor journey at the heart of our projects, we developed Amble – a self-guided heritage walks mobile application.
In 2022, we expanded our revival mission at a new site – Worli Koliwada. The Worli Koliwada Transformation Project will revive the 800-year-old urban village in the heart of Mumbai through different programmes.
The Heritage Project was seeded in line with RPG Foundation’s and RPG Groups’ love for Indian art and culture and a belief that the role of a corporate house extends beyond business and profitability. THP is one of the four social impact initiatives of RPG Foundation – the other three being – Education, Employability, and Community Development. To know more about RPG Foundation’s work, read here.
