The Heritage Project, too, focuses on digital heritage experiences. As part of this, we have developed Amble – a mobile application with self-guided heritage walking tours. The app enables unique and fascinating experiences for people who want to explore Mumbai’s iconic historical and cultural sites and the stories surrounding them.
Tours on Amble are carefully curated, and some routes feature Augmented Reality experiences. It redefines heritage tourism by making history accessible at one's fingertips. The app allows hands-free and voice-guided navigation and lets you experience the hidden gems at your own pace. The content is extensively researched and gives you information about the origin and journey of each heritage site. In addition, it incorporates facts about craftsmanship, philosophy, architecture, culture, and historic events surrounding these iconic places.
Endorsed by Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Amble is available free of charge on AppStore and PlayStore. It is updated every month with new heritage tours around Mumbai.
Starting at the Asiatic Library, this walk takes you around the Horniman Circle, Flora Fountain, Bombay Samachar building – the oldest newspaper in Mumbai, and the first Anglican Church built in 1718 – The St. Thomas' Cathedral. It also takes you to the Rajabai Clock Tower, modelled after the Big Ben, and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (formerly known as the Prince of Wales Museum), which houses an exquisite collection of over 6,000 artifacts. This walk takes you through impressive and culture-rich sites and ends at the famous Gateway of India.
The beautiful Castella De Aguada or Bandra Fort built in 1640 by the Portuguese, and 16th century Mount Mary Church made it into this walk. Places of interest also include Bollywood's spectacular Mehboob Studios which spread over an area of more than 20,000 square yards, and famous food gems such as A1 Bakery & Hearsch Bakery.
The Banganga Heritage Walk lets you explore the ancient Precinct, which houses various temples like the Mahalakshmi Temple, Ganapati Temple, Walkeshwar Temple, the temple with the towering white shikhara - Rameshwar Temple, Rama Kund, and the Dasmaniya Akhada. The walk also features an Augmented Reality experience of the Banganga Tank, which takes a user back in time.
