Sewri Fort

A forgotten Portuguese military fort on the eastern waterfront of Mumbai

Location

Sewri, Mumbai, Maharashtra

Monumental Heritage

GRADE I Historic Fort, built in 1680 by Portuguese

Project Initiation

2025

Reimagining a forgotten Fort, along the city’s eastern edge, Sewri is a 17th-century coastal outpost that once stood guard over the city’s harbor. Built in 1680 by the British East India Company, this basalt stone fort was part of the defense system, designed with military architecture and minimal ornamentation. Derelict and succumbing to age and other wear and tear the Fort is adopted by THP under the Adopt a Heritage scheme.

Keeping revival at the crux of the project, the Fort will be envisioned as a space that encourages continued use, regular maintenance and a new venue for the city to explore! Interventions such as a stie museum, spaces for events, illumination, and signage, will be designed for the Fort. Other interventions such as better entrance and accessibility, cleanliness, greening etc. are a part of the overall plan.
