Community

Our holistic approach to heritage goes beyond preservation—it places the community at the heart of every site. By focusing on energising the local economy, we design programs that build skills, create livelihood opportunities, and promote well-being, ensuring that development is inclusive, sustainable, and community-led.
Empowering Women, Celebrating Culinary Heritage

Chefs of Koliwada is an initiative of The Heritage Project that honours the rich food traditions of Mumbai’s native Koli community while championing women-led entrepreneurship.

With over 150 women from Worli and Versova Koliwadas across 14 Self Help Groups, the program promotes authentic Koli cuisine through curated dining experiences, food festivals, and skill-building in business, branding, and hospitality.

Building Local Ambassadors of Heritage

As part of our community empowerment efforts, The Heritage Project trains local youth to lead heritage walks across our project sites. Through immersive workshops, they develop skills in research, storytelling, and public engagement—emerging as confident custodians of their own history.

To date, 15 youth from Worli Koliwada have completed two rounds of training, with new sessions underway in Banganga, The Nest, and beyond—shaping a growing network of heritage leaders from within the community.

At The Heritage Project, we believe that preserving heritage begins with empowering communities.

We support local youth through structured sports programs—kabaddi, football, and cricket—fostering teamwork, discipline, and pride. For younger children, we enhance early learning by upgrading Anganwadi Centres and training caregivers.

Community well-being is further strengthened through regular health camps and awareness drives. Skills training in tailoring, embroidery, and entrepreneurship equips women and youth with tools for self-reliance.

By working closely with local stakeholders, we ensure that development is not only sustainable—but deeply rooted in cultural identity.
