Mapping the Lesser Known Uncovering Mumbai’s Hidden Heritage, One Story at a Time

Mapping the Lesser Known was a dynamic research program that invited architecture students to look beyond Mumbai’s iconic landmarks and explore the city’s overlooked heritage.

Through immersive fieldwork and hands-on documentation, students brought to light forgotten spaces, community histories, and cultural practices that often go unnoticed in the urban narrative.

The initiative not only sparked a deeper personal connection to the city’s everyday heritage, but also furthered our mission: to centre local stories, spaces, and people in shaping Mumbai’s evolving identity.

Exploring India’s Cultural Legacy The Pan India Research Program

A flagship initiative of The Heritage Project, the Pan India Research Program documents the rich tapestry of India’s heritage, from iconic monuments to forgotten crafts and traditions.

By capturing the cultural significance, condition, and conservation needs of each site, the program brings attention to both celebrated and overlooked legacies, emphasizing their role in shaping collective identity.

Cultural Mapping of Mumbai’s Koliwadas Documenting the Living Heritage of the City’s First Communities

The Heritage Project launched the first edition of its Cultural Mapping of Koliwadas research grant, designed to build strong documentation frameworks for India’s living heritage.

Focusing on Mumbai’s original fishing settlements, this initiative highlights the Koliwadas, bringing to light their rich tangible and intangible heritage.

Students conducted in-depth studies on community life, traditional occupations, built environments, and cultural practices across Mumbai and its metropolitan region.

By centering local voices, the program nurtured respect for these dynamic, often overlooked aspects of the city’s heritage.
