Our Impact

Worli Koliwada, one of Mumbai’s oldest fishing villages, is home to the Kolis, the original inhabitants of the city. The Koliwada has always been driven by its community, stories, and culture. Unlocking this through oral stories has been key to this project to develop a scalable model focused on community ownership. You’ll find a tourist-friendly map and a children’s book that bring the area’s stories to life.

To empower this community, the young girls and boys are now called ‘Walk leaders’ andare trained to narrate community histories to the visitors. Home makers that reside here are our ‘Chefs of Koliwada’ – 14 women who are deep rooted in their Koli cooking skills, were further trained, given hotel experience and other management skills. These ladies now also form the ‘Ruchira Self-Help Group’ under the Government. Additionally, various women are now trained in embroidery and tailoring, general duty nursing programs, cleanliness awareness and much more.

To make Koliwada visible and accessible, the project enhanced public spaces such as the Gora Dapkal Ground, the Cleveland Jetty, the Kabbadi Ground  through infrastructure upgrades. Over 40 signages and 70 streetlights installed, important buildings along the heritage walk route have their facades illuminated. With a vision of an Art District, the Koliwada, today, has 7+ public murals curated for urban placemaking with artists from all over the country leaving their strong messages about the culture of the Koliwada.  Our efforts have been strengthened by the BMC where they have improved drainage systems, access roads and much more for Worli Koliwada.

Curated events and storytelling experiences helped ignite pride and dialogue, both within and beyond the community. Over 750 participants engaged through festivals, heritage walks, art trails, food events, and poetry readings.
